A deep dive into the developer roadmap and the next seasonal event coming to Borderlands 3.
There's a helluva lot coming to Borderlands 3 in the near future, and this month's episode of The Borderlands Show is here to prepare you for all the upcoming mayhem. In Episode 5, regular hosts Greg Miller and Fran Mirabella from Kinda Funny were joined by Borderlands community stalwart MitsuShow and Borderlands 3 Live Lead Graeme Timmins for an onslaught of Borderlands 3 info, including details on the content coming in a huge February patch. They took a first look at Broken Hearts Day, the next free seasonal event on Borderlands 3's calendar, and dug into the Community Love Letterpublished earlier today, which includes an extensive Developer Roadmap detailing all kinds of additions and improvements on the way.
But first, we know what you're craving: Golden Keys! Here's the SHiFT code for three Golden Keys given out during The Borderlands Show Episode 5. During the show, Greg, Fran, and Mitsu recounted their experience with Borderlands 3's first campaign add-on, Moxxi's Heist of The Handsome Jackpot, and shared their candid thoughts on everything announced in the Community Love Letter. If you didn't already know, Mitsu cohosts the Bordercast podcast with Tessachka (who you might've seen on The Borderlands Show Episode 4) every Friday at 4:00 PM PT on Twitch.tv/Borderlands—but he also wanted to give a shoutout to the upcoming Ultimate Vault Hunters podcast. Hosted by fellow Borderlands Stream Team member SchviftyFive, Ultimate Vault Hunters will feature in-depth discussions with Borderlands 3's most devout, hardcore players who are pushing the limits of what's possible when it comes to Vault Hunter builds, optimal farming methods, and speedy solo runs of the Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite. Ultimate Vault Hunters is coming soon, promising tips, tricks, and insights from some of the very best Borderlands players around.
Later on, Graeme Timmins provided a lot of additional context for the Developer Roadmap shared in the Community Love Letter, offering his perspective on some of these highly requested features that are in the works. For instance, take Mayhem 2.0, the rework to the Mayhem Mode system that amps up the endgame difficulty to whatever degree you can handle. "We are [thinking] about 'How do we use these modifiers or abilities to create fun new playstyles, or encourage you to play something a little differently?'" said Graeme. "That was what we intended before, like 'Here are these modifiers that might help you try something different!' But the approach wasn't as successful as we wanted—and so this time, it's all about buffs, and those pushing you to try different things because it's a positive experience, as opposed to a negative experience."
Another big-ticket item in the Community Love Letter is the announcement of a level cap increase from 50 to 53, which will give you three additional skill points to play with when it goes live alongside Broken Hearts Day. Graeme delved into the approach Borderlands 3 is taking to skill point additions going forward—because let's face it, you always knew the level cap was going to go up. "Compared to BL2, in BL3 your perks and your abilities and your skill tree are way more powerful and way more impactful point to point," said Graeme, "so just handing out the same number of levels and skill points would really just destroy the game in terms of balance. It would also homogenize everyone's build; once everyone has everything, it's all the same, and you can't express yourself through your character and their gear. So in Borderlands 3, we're looking at it a lot differently based on that, and in this first [level cap increase] we're just going to do the three levels, and long-term we're exploring some other ways to encourage further player growth that might not be completely tied to skill points."
If you've ravenously devoured all this fresh Borderlands 3 info and you're already hungry for more, you'll be happy to know that some major announcements are coming at the end of the month. Expect tons of Borderlands 3 goodness—including a reveal of the second campaign add-on—at Gearbox's PAX East panel on Thursday, February 27 starting at 11:30 AM PST / 2:30 PM EST / 7:30 PM GMT. If you're not at the show, you can watch the livestream over on the official Borderlands Twitch channel, and it's sure to lead to some big points of discussion during next month's episode of The Borderlands Show. We hope to see you at PAX East, Vault Hunter—you won't want to miss this.
