Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production Anthony Nicholson returns to offer detailed info on Mayhem 2.0, the Revenge of the Cartels seasonal event, and more exciting stuff coming to Borderlands 3.
We’re now just a couple of days away from the release of Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, so it should come as no surprise that the second campaign add-on for Borderlands 3 featured prominently on The Borderlands Show Episode 6 earlier today. Gameplay highlights from the first hour of the spine-tingling new storyline came courtesy of Vault-hunting hosts Greg Miller and Fran Mirabella, who were joined once again by Borderlands Stream Team member MitsuShow. Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production Anthony Nicholson also returned to the show this week, sharing info about upcoming free additions to Borderlands 3 including Mayhem 2.0 and the Revenge of the Cartels seasonal event.
We’ll let Greg and Fran’s gameplay highlight reel of Guns, Love, and Tentacles’ opening hour speak for itself in the VOD above, but if you missed the show, there’s a lot of fresh info to catch up on regarding Borderlands 3’s huge plans for April. This episode debuted some big news: another free level cap increase will go live to coincide with the release of Guns, Love, and Tentacles patch, bringing the max level for your Vault Hunters up to 57. The extra skill points you’ll get from gaining these four additional levels will let you unlock two capstone skills, which should see a huge surge of power for endgame players and unlock all kinds of new build possibilities.
Later on, Anthony joined the show to kindly stand in for Max Babin, Gearbox Quebec’s Game Director who worked on Guns, Love, and Tentacles but couldn’t make it to The Borderlands Show this time due to world events. Anthony expanded on the early details shared in the Spring 2020 roadmap first shown at PAX East, including Mayhem Mode 2.0, the endgame overhaul that Borderlands 3 Live Creative Director Graeme Timmins first teased during The Borderlands Show Episode 5, as well as Revenge of the Cartels, Borderlands 3’s next big seasonal event, both of which are slated for April.
First up, Mayhem 2.0 turns Mayhem Mode into its own tab in your ECHO device, so you won’t have to visit the pedestal in Sanctuary III every time you want to adjust it. There are now 10 Mayhem levels to conquer, as well as over 25 Mayhem Modifiers that are classified by general difficulty for the ways they’ll make you adapt to new playstyles. Your chosen Mayhem level will also determine the kind of loot you get; for instance, a Mayhem 4 weapon will have better stats than the same weapon dropping at Mayhem 2, so the gear you earn in one Mayhem level will prepare you for the next.
Mayhem 2.0 is scheduled to launch alongside Revenge of the Cartels in April, a new six-week seasonal event affecting the entire galaxy of Borderlands 3. Your kindly Saurian pal Maurice has gotten himself in trouble with a shady character named Joey Ultraviolet, and now Joey’s coming to collect on some debts. You need to help Maurice wipe his slate clean by taking care of different thugs hiding out across the solar system including areas added in campaign add-ons; you’ll recognize them by their flashy neon attire. Once you’ve eliminated enough of these operatives, Maurice will use his handy portal device on Sanctuary III to whisk you away to The Mansion, a swanky new map where Joey Ultraviolet and his goons are hiding out.
Your encounters in The Mansion will change depending on which of three distinct gangs currently reigns over the Cartel. You won’t know what kind of enemies to expect until you’re in the thick of battle, beyond the fact that you’ll never fight the same faction twice in a row. Better yet, each gang has some unique loot drops and Anointed parts, so repeat runs are highly encouraged. An added suite of Cartel-themed Challenges will let you unlock Revenge of the Cartels gear, including some ‘80s-tastic Vault Hunter cosmetics. And of course, you’ll have the option to turn Revenge of the Cartels on or off as you choose for the duration of the event.
We’ll have even more details to share on both Mayhem 2.0 and Revenge of the Cartels closer to their big April debut, so stay tuned. And don’t think we’d leave all you Golden Keys fans hanging! Here’s the SHiFT code for a whopping FIVE Golden Keys that was given out during The Borderlands Show Episode 6. Make sure to redeem this SHiFT code here on Borderlands.com, on the Gearbox SHiFT site, or via the in-game Social menu in Borderlands 3 before it deactivates on April 8, 2020 at 11:59 PM PDT.
